Nome e cognome - First and last name (Var85 YKS 156)

Poi abitava in Olanda all' epoca, lo vedevo ogni morte de papa...

– Io so' de Pariggi." Così me beccai cor Ver.

FIRST AND LAST NAME

Even though I grew up surrounded by O'Clock's stuff, the Smat guys and the other Jon's throw-ups, my first memories of graffiti come from Rome. As a kid I used to go there every year to see my folks, and on the way from an aunt to a granny there were these big hot iron monsters that were all scribbled up. I couldn't stop staring at them. Then I heard of an older cousin of mine, he skated and wrote on walls. I didn't see him often but I had been caught by those three letters: Zee-Tee-Kay. For a week every year, I would look around me and see hundreds of them.

Different world different encounters, but the fact is that I started writing too. My first targets were trucks, the only surface that still runs across Paris, I must have learned a little something there. But I swear I didn't know what my cousin wrote when I chose my name. Plus he was living in Holland then, we were barely seeing each other...

Var throwups running on the B-line, 2007.
A few years later I found myself living in Rome for the first time. The last subway in Europe running with scars and tattoos on its face, I just can't let it go. And so, not really knowing where to start, I went strolling around Magliana.

My face was stuck to the window of an old Lido train that was empty because it was lunch time. All the windows open to flap the heat, I was watching the tetris of carriages in the yard and I didn't notice this other guy sitting at the end of the car. It wasn't too hard for him to spot me, I was wearing a uniform, old sweatpants full of holes and a plastic bag in my hand. Faithful to his style, which I would get to know well later on, he walks up to me and goes: "—So where you from anyway?" "I'm from Paris", I answer with a heavy Roman accent. That's how I hooked up with Ver.
Through him I met Koma first, and then little by little the whole TRV ZTK NSA clique. But in Rome you have to earn your subway, and as Guardians of the City, they never took me with them until I painted it on my own. The point is, some time later I found myself painting with my cousin's crew, who they call Lil' Far, and I hadn't even caught up with him yet. Similarities of first and last name.

Bam5 1995-2000

Math, also from Amsterdam, walked by in '96 and decided to leave his autograph on the window. In the meantime Fume and Teach DDS from London happened to drop by adding their styles to the great book of signatures that was the Rome subway in the 90′s. Finally you can see what this car looked like by the end of the millennium!

Vendetta Privata - Private Revenge (Stand TRV)

Hey hey pesante...

Thank’s to them kids of the Finnish crew CSK providing a proper background for our payback. (they crossed a nice piece of mine with their wholecar so…)
Was done and dedicated to MAKO after he passed away. He was a writer from the early 90's.

Pasqua 1997

Easter 1997

Here’s a Pane and Joe wholecar from Easter day 1997 painted in Magliana yard on the platforms…I think four wholecars hopped out of the easter egg that afternoon but unfortunately not one of them ever travelled with painted windows.

Sugo TRV Gast ZTK 1997

English version:

Sugo and Gast painting an end to end at Anagnina yard during lunch-hour. the funny thing is that it was painted on a broken subway car. In fact if you look inside the windows, you can see some parts hanging from the ceiling.
I remember an afternoon in 2001 at the Nenni bridge, the only point along the whole A-line where the trains come above ground and it is possible to admire the colors under the sun, when this car suddenly shot past me! The pieces had faded a little and looked kinda old, but you can't understand the excitement in seeing a car painted four years earlier that had simply disappeared in thin air. That's four years to fix a subway car...the usual Italian timing!

ADDICTED! (ver NSA)

Lido, 2004.
Arco di Travertino, 2001. Linea A.

Addicted!

A subway system running bombed for twenty years means a lot, it is a good business card for a city drowning in chaos, where too many souls are burning...They still haven't been able to stop us and I don't think they ever will.
Sooner or later we'll get mass arrests like has already happened in other cities. I just hope that day comes as late as possible. I'm always less and less paranoid when I go bombing, because I'm conscious of the fact that I'm one of those names they'll go ringing the doorbell for..
"You can't stop us!"

"Society condemns what it doesn't understand!"
A-line, 2001. Arco di Travertino station.

This should inhibit me in theory, but practically it's quite the opposite. It makes me wanna piss them off more and more, reclaiming what is OURS, doing what I want, where and when I want, bringing forward important concepts I've been taught by my predecessors and making them immortal because they are now a lifestyle!!!

"Destiny-Truth" by Des and Ver. Lido line, 2005.

Now it's even more fun, because we are all adults organizing ourselves to fool the guards that are often younger than us and remain incredulous after each and every action! Over these twenty years, bullets, high fences, ambushes, traps, injuries, broken bones, busts, snitches, sensors or video-cameras have been useless in trying to stop us; we are too enslaved by our first ADDICTION, which growing up we realized was the most genuine and powerful. They will not succeed in making us feel withdrawal symptoms. We are really sorry.

Wassily Kandinsky, "Lo Spirituale nell'Arte".

Art of Vandalism

If the artist is a priest of beauty, then beauty must be guided by the principle of inner worth...The only measure of beauty is greatness and inner necessity, which has always been very useful.
Something beautiful is something that is born from an inner necessity. Something beautiful must be innerly beautiful.
By beautiful we do not mean morality, exterior or interior, that is commonly accepted, but that which even imperceptibly sharpens or enriches the mind. For example in painting every color is innerly beautiful, because it induces a mental emotion, and every emotion enriches the soul. For this reason something that is innerly beautiful may be "ugly" on the exterior. Both in art and in life. Nothing is "ugly" in its interior outcome, that is in its influence on others.

Wassily Kandinsky, "Concerning the Spiritual in Art".

All Roads Lead to Rome

By the end of '96 writers from all over Europe and the world had come to Rome to leave their mark on the subway trains. We once caught some Austrian writers red-handed that had painted over one of our cars and the result was that they "kindly" gave us their paint. We were so used to industrial paints that had such a limited color-palette, that we found their Multona cans of a definite superior quality, such that they brought us more cans the next day.
We rationed their cans a little each time we went painting, until one night, completely drunk outside the fence of the Magliana yard, we found hundreds of used German-looking cans under some broken furniture, Belton ral and Auto-K for the most part! Hundreds of half empty cans left there by the RCB crew from Berlin that had come just a few months earlier and had totally bombed the B-line. We couldn't believe it, that hidden paint depot lasted us for months. It was not rare for us to enter the yard with 20 cans just to complete a panel. The colors were brighter, the highlights highlighted more, but above all they covered so much that it felt like cheating...

Roma City Bombing

Linea A, Linea B, Lido, Roma Nord, regionali, stazioni, e lungolinea. Fecero tutto nel giro di poche settimane!

Roma City Bombing

During the summer of '96 the Rome subway was on fire both due to the extreme heat but especially for the massive quantity of new pieces running on the trains. Literally overnight, numerous trains appeared with what seemed to be foreign names: the sheer number of new panels, top to bottoms and especially wholecars were a shock to many. It was the RCB crew from Berlin. Roma City Bombin', RCBoom, RCBullets, RCB-line vandals, these as well as other pseudonyms all greeted our eyes. They quickly seized a spot on the Roman trains, be it A-line, B-line, Lido, North line, regional trains, stations, tracksides, they did it all in a matter of a few weeks!
