Summer 1995:
I
was on a family trip to Tuscany that summer. For two days I sneaked out
and hooked up with Fume. He introduced me to Stand and his friends. The
first night we did a couple of panels together in a big yard, the
next morning Fume and Stand left Roma and I hooked up with Joe.
This guy was really fresh, but he did not speak English and I did not
speak any Italian so the communication was pretty funny as you can
imagine. Anyway I was hoping to do some subways, we checked a few spots
with this girl writer Star and another dude.
At the end of the night we ended up at the same spot I was at the night
before, did another panel, bombed some trains, and smoked some hash, it
was all good...
That year I had a few court cases coming, that's why I slowed down a bit, and was going to start studying after the summer. I remember sitting in college during Art history classes watching all these famous Italian buildings and fountains I passed by drunk, or on the back of Joe's Vespa. Made me smile!

Estate 1995:

Casilina Express (Kiv TNT)
vita. I graffiti devono esprimere la verità. Lo stile viene dopo.
Il perché non è razionale. L’essenza

sarebbe cambiato in meglio.
L'unico

In realtà c'erano

senza palo, notti in giro a lasciare tag e throw up. Casilina, Tuscolana, Prenestina, e Tiburtina erano le aree favorite in quegli
anni. E poi in yard di giorno: Tuscolano, Paninaro e Anagnina e
raramente Nuovo Salario. Base alla Snia, obiettivo Roma.

Diventammo una famiglia giocando nella
città e imparando a gestire l'adrenalina, cercando situazioni sempre
Affinare l'intuito, muoversi, e riuscire quasi sempre
a salvarsi dall' arresto.
Questi sono valori preziosi per la
vita!

English:
The old messed-up trains that have been running up and down the Casilina since the 1950's, exude the life and memories of Rome's suburbs. There is no line in the city that is as heavily laden down with stories, characters out of a third-rate comedy, derelicts, and tragicomic scenes. These trains run right down the middle of this ancient road, right under everyone's eyes.
The energy of graffiti can only be perceived by seeing these trains passing by, living the suburbs and the people that ride them every day, smelling their odour and absorbing the life they express. Graffiti must express Truth. Style comes later.
Why this is, is not a rational explanation. The essence is in the streets, lives in the city, and gets consumed and dies there; because it is the art of life!

I peeked out into the world in the winter of 1980, on the second floor of a building in the Centocelle neighborhood.
Thirty meters from the Casilina line yard.
My recollection of these trains is easily lost among the foggy memories of my childhood days.
The tram used to go all the way to Piazza dei Mirti, and the S.E.R.T. (rehab for junkies) featured in the film "Amore Tossico" ("Junkie Love") was still there, right in front of the bus terminal, and the buses were still green back then.

Rome in the 80's was a completely different city. I remember it being gloomy, dirty, and run-down, but there were just a fraction of the cars on the streets.
The train depot didn't even have a fence around it back then.
When it rained, the smell of the trains would pervade the whole neighborhood.
I can remember the smell of the yard ever since I was a little kid, but back then I had no idea of the importance it would have acquired later on.
My childhood was a hustle and bustle of happiness and sadness.
The 90's came around with a certain atmosphere of change, the world was just coming out of the Cold War, and Rome was just coming out of the 80's, the bombs, and heroin.
Everything was fresh, there was a certain momentum for change, and in general it was believed that things would actually change for the better. Already in middle school, I had this vague feeling that shit was just gonna stay the way it was, but all I thought about was having fun as much as possible. I basically didn't identify with anything that others around me did or believed in; at the arcade room I was bullied, I sucked at soccer, girls didn't want me, and I smoked my first joint when I was 17. I'd share my afternoons on the street with my 4 friends and my skateboard, which was the only past-time that embodied a real sense of freedom.
I saw the first photos of graffiti on TV, or on skate-zines when I was in elementary school. I had been reading some names for quite some time now, here and there on the Casilina: Duster, Crok, Scatto, FCP, Krimz, Seep, Bingo, and that's pretty much it, because there probably were at most 50 writers in the whole city!
![]() |
| Krimz FCP (Cina TRV) on the Casilina line, 1994. |
From looking at these names I figured out that there was a whole world revolving around them, but I couldn't figure out the real deal since I didn't know anybody who wrote.
I started going to the Ripetta Art School in 1994, which at the time was full of writers. The SHM crew, a couple TRV's as well, and some other dudes that were more or less active in the growing movement. This was enough to clear my mind, and I started doing my first tags. Slowly, things started picking up momentum on all the lines.
After a year or so, I got a wake-up call. Travelling down the Casilina I saw the walls painted in Tor Bella Monaca at the "Quartieri" Jam.
I remember that deep, distinct, physical feeling that something big was going on. I started seeing throwups running on the Casilina trains by Bonze, 23 Rec, Koma, Clint, and also Yess TUW's awesome pieces.

After changing school, I started hanging out at the EX SNIA Viscosa occupied squat with the TNT crew, and that's when things really got going for me.
The first few years I was just doing street bombing full-time, doing big pieces on the street around dinner time without lookouts, and doing tags and throwups all night long. Casilina, Tucolana, Prenestina, and Tiburtina were my favorite stomping grounds back then. We also painted yards during the daytime: Tuscolano, Paninaro, Anagnina, and Nuovo Salario once in a while. Our HQ was the SNIA, our goal was the entire city of Rome.

We became a family, playing in the city and learning to deal with adrenaline, finding ourselves in more and more dangerous situations, and learning to look out for each other in the craziest situations.
We learned where and when to look, becoming completely present and conscious, learning to be One with the bustling city. We honed our intuition, learned how to move around and not get arrested.
These are important values to learn in life!

Through the obsessive repetition of my tag I began to realize that the movement of the sign deeply reflected the interior movement of my soul. There was a distinctive light emanating from certain tags preventing me from taking my eyes off of them.
Whenever I wrote my name, I would feel closer to the center of myself.
We were together and wrote together so we could be ourselves more profoundly, through the sign, the identity, the name, and the challenge.
Writing our names was the means; our goal was freedom. Being able to change reality with our hands and our will-power, and finding harmony time after time in the center of One's Self...
At a certain point it stopped being a game!
We started painting on all the lines, with particular focus on our area, and writing graffiti took up my whole life for some years. It was like an addiction. If I didn't paint for a while I couldn't sleep at night, and if I did manage to fall asleep, I would dream trains.
We had reached a "stage" of the video-game where nothing was impossible. The risk was growing bigger but so was our awareness of the system.
It became constantly easier to rock our names and ever so difficult for us to get caught! Anywhere we were, we knew every little corner, above ground as well as below. Strange encounters, crazy cops following us all the way to school, absolutely inexplicable escapes, and thousands of crazy stories...
Our intuition was growing and developing into a sixth sense, at the same time we had the feeling that an invisible hand was guiding our every action.

The Revelation came promptly one night, among the Centocelle trains.
After finishing my piece, I stopped among the trash-trains for a moment to study the guard's movements and enjoy the view. There was a full-moon, a starry sky, and only one lamppost in the whole depot.
From the top of the elevated yard I could see cars zipping by between the Casilina and Viale Palmiro Togliatti, anonymous and directionless.
I was standing there staring at my piece, and just couldn't stop looking at it. For some reason it fulfilled me more than usual.
Raising my head, I distractedly saw, beyond the fence, the windows of the apartment building where I was born. I hadn't lived there for 15 years but I still felt at home among those trains, ancient, decrepit, and melancholy like the smells from my childhood. I saw myself as a kid behind that window looking down, and immediately all those times that I had watched those trains from above came to mind, when the fence was still to be built.
I looked down at my name written on the train, and it felt as if it had been there forever... It was Destiny and Truth!

Mistico o casuale, lasciamo a voi l'interpretazione dello strano fenomeno.

The Jon tag on the motor under the car that was forgotten by the buff, confirms the subway car's uniqueness.
We have noticed how during the passage from the B-line's pre-buff era (1992-2001) to its post-buff era (from 2002 to date), apart from the difference in style, how the subway cars curiously always attract the same people or even the same colors. Mystical or by chance, any interpretation of this strange phenomenon is left up to you.
