Captain's Log

What's really fascinating is the accumulation of layers of paint on the subway cars. It is possible to read them like history books. Stories of friendship, love, hate, enemies, and adventures of every kind. Generations of youngsters expressed themselves and communicated their inner Self, their joys, anger and problems on the surfaces of the trains. Like a diary where everybody adds his thoughts and feelings every day. Here are the entries Nico, Jon, Chico, and Gor wrote on page 113 for the years 1996, 1997, and 1998.

Go Down Baby!

English version:

Go Down Baby

It's been a long time since I last painted and breathed the smell of spraypaint and the trains...to be honest I can't even remember those smells I lived with for so long that well. My hands, shoes, and clothes all dirty with paint, and waking up with a pasty mouth after having spent the whole night in a train yard. It's been a while since I've even taken the metro and I can barely remember all the noises, sounds, and feelings seeing it go by painted, provoked in me.
Gor and Tuff passing by at Ponte Mammolo during the B-line's golden era. 1996.

Nyco Gor One leaving Garbatella station. B-line, 1997.

And yet I would like to have the chance to experience those feelings again, as if all this time had not gone by, as if I was still completely into it with my whole self, as I was back then, when every moment was good to leave a tag, steal cans, and organize the next mission to paint the metro. Shit, I can easily say that for five years I spent more time in metro stations than at home, more time going around tagging than at school, and more time chilling with my crew and racking up spraypaint than with my girlfriend. Hell yeah, good times and good memories.

I'm not sure whether experiencing graffiti writing in my life and everything around it was good or bad. Surely for all the time I spent I got back very little economically, practically not even a cent, even though I do some work as a graphic artist. If instead of spending all that energy painting metros I had invested my time doing something more fruitful, it probably would have been better for me and my life. Or maybe not, maybe I would not have truly been myself, and would have probably missed out on something unique that few people can understand, and that I am happy to have experienced. It's something I would never change for anything in the world.

Even if my memories are kinda fuzzy and my mind is full of mixed up, confused images, I feel emotional and get goose bumps if I think of the first time I saw a B-line subway train go by where I had a piece on every car. That's six pieces on six cars. One of which was a Gor end to end by myself. In it I wrote "go down baby" in an explosion of colors of the best spraypaints that enclosed the dreams of a kid that was probably living the best moment of his life.
I thank all the people that shared some of those moments with me.

English version:

Quick end2end painted at the Magliana yard late one afternoon when there was some important soccer match going on. I remember while we were painting some workers and guards were maybe three cars down watching the game on a portable tv. We could see them the whole time but they couldn’t see us…they were too focused trying to follow a fuckin’ ball across a TV screen to even realize we were doin’ it right under their noses. I guess everyone’s got their passion!
Gor Jon Joe 3-0 once again.

NET TYSON 1996-2001

Net-Tyson. B-line, 1996, 1998, 2001.

Honet and Tyson fullcolor wholecar on the B-line in all its glory! Opak was there too and did a silver Soleil wholecar, plus two One and Jon gold wholecars got done that night as well. Stand “Mike” Tyson dealt quite a blow to public transport with this one, and Honet reminded thousands of early-morning travellers going to work that private ownership of the means of production is the prime cause for the existence of social classes and inequality, and that a proletarian revolution is the only solution if humankind is to develop any further. Hmm, does Vandalism have anything to do with Marxism?

Distinzioni - Distinctions (Neor ARF RV HP)

Roma è 'no ZOO...e i leoni so' in via d'estinzione.

No spie, no infami, no poser

Distinctions

People leaving this world...the more time passes the worse it will get...it's normal, it's like a town with few inhabitants where everybody knows everything about everybody else and people are fighting each other, for what? A stupid war? "We're doing the same thing!" How many times have I heard this stupid phrase...we are NOT doing the same thing! If two people are drinking beer, and one falls to the ground while the other gets hyped then they're not traveling down the same road. Walks of life, people, situations, the choice is up to you! You can't have one foot on the ground and one on the water and feel the thrill if there is no risk of drowning...not everybody's friend, no fake smiles. This is a no man's land; you start from zero and you prevail over others not based on whether you show your claws, but on how well you sink them deep into someone else...for those who drank your same beer but traveled on different wavelengths, Rome is a ZOO, and lions are nearly extinct.

No snitches, no posers

Citizen: I damage your creation, I bring you back to reality after the hard day's work with your head hanging down after which you think you've done enough and take refuge in the fake world you've created for yourself in the cell you're surviving in...urban impact...Black flag...Pirates of a new generation...we take away but give back everything plain and stark, nothing less. Vox Populi...in a maniacal manner, I exist, I persist, I leave a mark on all surfaces by any means...it will be erased materially maybe, but I have been alive.

Stand 1994-2001

Here’s another example of longevity. Stand panel done in 1994 was running in 2001. As you can see the car is totally bombed by then and already counting many layers of paint. Syla from PAC crew painted the car in 1999, and Pim snuck a t2b throwup right in between in 2001. Many names appeared and just as quickly disappeared over the years, and it is by no chance that Stand remained. He’s the Grandpa of Roman graffiti!

10 anni dopo

10 years later

Stand Fume Latte(by Milk) panels painted in 1994. Few years later the Fume and Stand got one of their doors buffed, but that didn’t keep them from running and showing the public their fill-ins…nope! In 2004 they were still bouncing back’n'forth across the city from Anagnina, through rome’s historic center and all the way to Battistini. This damn car ran painted for ten years!!! I wonder how many thousands of German tourists came to the Eternal City to check out ancient Roman history and culture and instead were confronted by modern graffiti of two Germans like themselves?! Fumes are generally bad for your health while Milk is usually good for you. I guess it takes two Germans to Stand the test of time!

Bombing e Matematica

English version:

Bombing and Mathematics

Panels painted in '96 by Side and One, both left-handed. Side was another name for Far and often appeared as FARSIDE on the trains. Far went to study out of Italy at a certain point, that is far away. One on the other hand always wrote the same name except on rare occasions, and painted a huge number of pieces. Seeing so many one, one, one, one, one pieces running reminds us that 1+1=2 and that bombing is not an opinion.

Trust Yourself (Kare NSA r.i.p.)

Linea A, 2001.

I graffiti!

Trust Yourself

I’ll never forget when just a few years ago, I’d climb on buses with my marker overflowing with ink hidden in my sleeve. People looking at me, and I’d know that none of those faces would ever imagine what I was about to do…men in suit and tie holding their briefcase, old ladies with tired looks, kids, women, in a bus you can meet practically anybody.

Maybe one day I too would have been one of those people dressed elegantly to go to work, but during that period it never crossed my mind…my name…the only thing I cared about was writing my name, and I would do it without anybody seeing me…all those people that saw me from the moment I got on to the moment I got off never caught me as I let my trustworthy Pilot slip out of my sleeve and bombed the smooth surface of the bus with my name…it was like a game, like a challenge to society that ignores us and leaves us going round in circles without giving us anything to create ourselves upon…I’ve certainly bombed a great many buses, and every time I’d get off I’d stare at my name with satisfaction. Who knows whether those people ever read it or ever asked themselves who I was and why I did it.

When I still hadn’t started writing, I had no weapons to avenge myself, when I still hadn’t started writing I was one of the many…my name has given me the chance to feel part of this city, which I love as I love myself.

Kare poses next to the Coliseum. A-line, 2001.
Graffiti! They’re common knowledge now, I think, nobody can say they don’t know what graffiti is, everyone has their own opinion about them. They are considered an art by many, but nobody has yet understood what it feels like to destroy a whole city, bomb the subway every night, giving up too many things only for those feelings that envelop us and make us forget everything…free from responsibilities and obligations…and free to do what the heart and soul command us…embracing a unique vision of the world, constantly writing your name in the search for yourself and your style.

Having finished his spraypaint, Kare fills his Name with an oilbar. Genius! A-line, 2001.
Today not much has changed from those days. Some nights I can’t fall asleep if I think about the fact that just a short time ago I was with my brothers deciding where to hit, if I think about the fact that every time I got home from bombing I’d fall on the bed and into a deep sleep that few people have experienced. The sleep of someone who got back whole, the sleep of someone who wakes up and will want to do it all over again.

Directly from the yard, Kare falls into a deep sleep while waiting for his train to pass by. 8,00 'O clock in the morning, 2001.

…I’ll never stop thinking about my name because I was born with the will to emerge, and today when I get on a bus I don’t think about not being seen because I don’t care, people see in me a kid like many, maybe a university student, maybe a mechanic, maybe an athlete, but I am a writer and I’m proud I grew up with this mentality which today gives me a chance to hope for my future, because graffiti has taught me to believe in myself.
