L'Ultimo Verme - The Last Worm (Pung ARF HP)

Era lì, caldo e faceva i suoi rumori. Pochi mesi dopo ritornai a Roma dai miei amici.

The Last Worm

When I came to Rome for the first time in 2004, the metro seemed to me like an incomprehensible book. It was dirty and all written up, and according to my opinion as a foreign graffiti writer, people had no respect for one another. The pieces were often crossed out and the graffiti was crude and executed with little precision.

I soon met the guys from the ARF crew. All different from one another but nice people with which I would have soon spent many hours "reading" the sides of the A line trains, drinking many Peroni beers, doing tags on the station platforms, and shooting photos of new pieces. A while later I started painting the line with them. It was instant love. It wasn't enough for me to go to their "spot". I started painting during the daytime as well, jumping on the tracks in front of passengers to reach the trains parked in the tunnels. From that moment on a true love story had begun with this line that runs completely underground.

I am like a rat. I like tunnels where it never rains and where the sun never shines. I spent so many nights trying to find new ways to get in and paint. The important thing wasn't even being able to reach the subway train, but trying to sneak into the tunnel and breathing the rotten air typical of the A-line. But soon enough a terrible tragedy occurred on the A-line that was like a sickness. The old cars were replaced with these horrible white plastic cars.

It is as if the beautiful orange worm that had been running across Rome for so many years was being devoured by the modern monsters without a soul. During that period many Roman writers stopped painting. A page in history had been turned. But me, Neor, and also Erotik from time to time kept checking the layups and the yards, as if obsessed by the color orange, as if we refused to accept this change. One night, shortly before my transfer abroad, we met the last surviving orange train that was still running on the line. There it was, warm and making its usual sounds. The sounds of the huge metal beast that rests, satisfied after its hard day's work. I always thought that it might even have dreams itself. We slowly got closer and with extreme joy we started painting. It had been months since I had touched it. I was caught in between two emotions. On one hand the excitement of once again painting it, maybe for the last time. On the other the bitterness in thinking that soon even this "composition" would soon disappear. A few months later I returned to Rome to see my friends. The last evening was a classic "saturday night" with Peroni beers, throwups, techno, brawls and drugs...we left the party to go take the first A-line train towards Anagnina then straight to the airport.
It was 6 in the morning when this famous orange subway stopped in front of me. I thought it could not be real, that it was just the effect of the LSD I had eaten that I was halucinating on. I took a flick and understood it was real. It was the last time I ever saw this subway running, and I like to think that the worm accompanied me out of Rome before going to die in the depth of his lair, just like an old dog thanks you for all the love you gave him before disappearing in the woods.

Il Vento Cambia - The Wind Changes (Poo NSA)

Poo, end to end accannato fermo a Piramide, il capolinea Romano. Linea Lido, 2000.

The Wind Changes

I don't remember what year it was, maybe '98 or '99 but it's not important. It was a cold winter and we used to go to Ostia by scooter to paint the Lido line. When we'd get off the scooter our hands were already cold and while painting we risked getting our arm completely frozen. Your hand would be paralyzed and feel numb for a long time. That night everything was going well, we were painting a cool end to end with a colorful background. We were bombing at Colombo station, the endstop of the Lido line, down by the end of the tracks, and the wind was blowing from the station where the security was, towards us.

The end of the tracks in Ostia. Cristoforo Colombo station.

Poo, unfinished end to end, Piramide station. Lido line, 2000.

When the wind blew in that direction usually everything was fine because the noise wouldn't reach the station. Instead it would get lost in the vastness of the woods all around us. Unfortunately for us, the direction of the wind suddenly changed and so did the course of the evening. The noise of the cans reached the guard dog's ear, and immediately that asshole started barking and woke up the guard. We had almost finished painting when the guard came running with the gun in his hand. He yelled "Freeze or I'll shoot", but we were already running towards the fence. All of a sudden "BOOM", the thud of a gun shooting, but contrary to other times I heard something hissing past me just a few centimeters away. They had shot us many times before but mostly in the air to scare us and make us run. But that night the noise similar to that of a tennis racket just barely missing the ball gave me the certainty that we were being shot at. My mind didn't even have time to feel scared before I was already climbing over the fence and getting lost in the woods. We'd made it again that night, and that motherfuckin' guard didn't have any dead writer on his conscience. While going back home on my scooter that night, I kept thinking about how sometimes in life the course of the wind just suddenly changes.

Apollineo vs. Dionisiaco

English version:

Apollonian vs. Dionysian

"Instead, when in art we encounter naivety, we must recognize in it the highest effect of the Apollonian culture: which always has the task of destroying a kingdom of titans and of killing monsters; and with powerful, fantastic figurations and charming illusions it must result victorious over the formidable abyss of contemplation of the world and an extreme excitability that is the cause of suffering. But how rarely is naivety achieved, the complete identification with the beauty of appearance!"

-Friedrich Nietzsche, "The Birth of Tragedy"

"Wild marker your time has come...within 48 hours the scrawlings will be removed from this and 4 other subway stations. So if you have decided to waste more ink think about it for at least two minutes." Piazza di Spagna station, A-line. 1999.
