Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie - serie MA100 (part 1)

I campi fuori Anagnina.

Alone & A-line

During August of 1999 nearly everyone went on vacation and Rome was empty. A suffocating heat made you wanna live only by night, so I often painted the A-line by myself in Anagnina. I always took the infamous 55 night bus from Termini, that ran along the whole via Tuscolana and left me outside the farmers' fields near the depot.

One night I was on a half-empty night bus, when at a certain point I noticed this really fat, smelly guy masturbating just a few seats away from this young girl, with this real maniac look on his face. I yelled a few insults at him and the sick smelly guy stopped. I tried to warn the girl, who happened to be a foreign tourist, but she was too damn drunk to understand what I was trying to tell her.
A while later, I had fallen asleep, I heard the doors open and close so I raised my head to see what stop I was at. I saw that poor young girl staggering from side to side as the maniac followed just behind her. I yelled to the driver to stop but the bus just kept on going. At the next stop I got off and ran back hoping to catch up with that motherfucker, but there was no trace of her or him!
I walked towards the depot, all the way to the fence that they had recently modified. They had added a V with barbed wire on top. To get in now you had to climb over 3 meters on one side, plus the 2 and a half meter drop on the other side. I had become an expert at climbing over that fence. It only took me a few seconds with the bag full of spraypaints in my mouth. One time I tried to jump from the top of the fence all the way down to the tracks. When I landed on my feet I nearly got paralyzed in the impact! That night I climbed over with my packpack that hammered into my back, and I lay on the ground in pain.

Another time before going in, I had to take a shit. In the fields there is this square cement slab with a manhole, and that's where I took my shit. A nice puddle of warm liquid shit...it was diarrhea. Painting after having taken a shit had never been so relaxing!
I went back to Anagnina many times after that shit, and to my surprise it had fossilized under the sun! Needless to say, my shit kept me company for the rest of the summer.

Another time, after having painted, I went to get my backpack that I had hidden in the bushes, and as I extended my arm to grab it, in the darkness I saw two eyes open wide about one meter from me. "What the fuuuuck!" I yelled in fear, but it was just a homeless dude sleeping there.
When you're alone, you have to paint and check at the same time, and have all six senses always on alert, which is like possessing the gift of ubiquity. One night as I was painting, I heard something and leaning down under the train I saw the guard's feet coming in my direction. I grabbed the bag of paint and hid under the train. The guard appeared at the end of the train and started walking up the length of the train towards me. He stopped just a few meters from where I was hiding. I was afraid he'd notice the fresh paint so I stopped breathing and prayed for him to leave. He stood there what seemed like eternity to me. He suspected something was wrong but luckily his sixth sense was not as refined as mine was, and suddenly turned around and slowly left just as he had arrived. So I was able to finish what I was there for.

Chi in panchina…chi in banchina - Those on the bench...those on the platform (Neor ARF)

L' Italia scende in campo.

A volte secondi sembravano ore ed a volte minuti sembravano secondi. Non sapevamo cosa stesse accadendo all’esterno.

Iniziarono i festeggiamenti ovunque.

Those on the bench...those on the platform

These days there's a lot of talk about soccer, between scandals and European championships, and my mind goes back a few years...
It was the summer of 2006, and tension was mounting day after day in the whole peninsula, and street vendors selling t-shirts, flags, and horns started appearing like mushrooms in the Eternal City...Yes, Italy was in the finals against France in the World Cup.
As the days passed, the summer got closer and closer and with it an ever more scorching sun unnerved the people, already going through a performance anxiety for the upcoming event. I was with Pung and the beers refreshed our throats as the trains went by, immortalizing moments, when among the sounds of the horns and the Italian flags that by then were monopolizing the colors of the city, we had an idea: to play this match ourselves...but our own way.
So the fateful day arrived...
The teams prepared in the locker rooms as we shook the cans and their tinkling was ... by the sound of honking cars...you could feel the adrenalin growing in the whole city, you could almost touch it with your fingers.

At a certain point Rome became empty and its streets turned into those of a ghost-town. The one and only sound you could hear was that of the commentator on national TV.
It was now time for us to take the field...
The teams took their position and the referee whistled the start of the game. Their match had started, and so had ours. We sprung to the side, dribbling the defenders and getting in front of the goal.
In the underground world there were no nations playing...all there was, was the silence and scent of grime that only a subway tunnel can offer. The only perceptible things were the sound of our steps and the in-service subways going by.
The flow of time seemed to possess a relativity never before perceived as such. At times seconds seemed like hours, and minutes seemed like seconds. We had no idea what was going on outside. All we knew was that our aim was to score as soon as possible. Our match wasn't made up of 2 halves...we were playing with th Golden Goal.
The heat in the tunnel was infernal...every subway that went by gave us a breath of fresh air, but was like a serpent...yes, the subway was like a snake that enchants you with its beauty and then bites you...every subway passing was like a double-edged sword. While it brought fresh air, it also drove that same muggy air loaded with the smell of paint all the way to the station where the defenders were...

Our arms swung from side to side like those of an orchestra director, but at 180 bpm...the sweat was making my t-shirt heavy...
I could feel time passing like the ticking of a timer, but I had no time to actually see how much time had elapsed since the beginning of the match.
Finally we managed to score 2 goals...2 wholecars with the same colors. Those same colors that held millions of people stuck to a plastic box. We both finished with incredible synchronism, but the worst thing was that we scored 2 goals but could not cheer out loud.
I wrote on one side of my wholecar “Chi in panchina…chi in banchina" (Those on the bench...and those on the platform), and on the other side "ARF 2 - Security 0"
We got to the surface and time seemed like it had stood still. There was the same situation there had been before the match had started. Our match was over, but the one on TV was still in its first half.
We got in the car and the radio informed us that the result was 1-1. As we turned the corner we rejoiced and hugged each other as passers-by looked towards our car, unable to understand why we were the only ones in the whole city yelling.
We met up with the others at Poe's house. When we got there the second half had already started and the same tension monopolizing the whole city. Nobody really payed too much attention to us, apart from an "everything all right?" Undoubtedly if we were there with smiles on our faces, compared to their terrified looks, it means we had already won our match. Poe's mom gave us what was left over from their dinner and we joined the others watching the game.
We too entered that vortex as if sucked into a black hole. The second half ended, then over-time as well, and the match proceeded to penalty shots...
My throat blocked the little saliva that was forming in my mouth...then suddenly a roar...Italy was world champion again after 24 years, but for us it was as if Rome had just awakened to the fact that "our" match had been won. Celebrations started everywhere.

We went downtown, and among the utter sounds, noise, and colors, there was one moment during which the volume of the surrounding atmosphere lowered in my mind...my thoughts went to the security guards that were all happy and taken by the celebrations and of how their expression would have changed the moment they saw the subway, and how those same colors they loved and that just a few moments earlier had given them so much joy, in the blink of an eye would bring them a carriage full of problems...actually 2 carriages full of problems...and at last I thought about the serpent sleeping in its own silence, unaware of all that was happening on the surface and ready to go out the next morning to display its new skin.
The volume increased as I smiled and was dragged away by the sound of Rome and the madness that reigned supreme that night.

Lieto Fine - Happy Ending (Joe TRV)

Che poi me telefonò pure. Va be'.

Happy Ending

Hey guys, I am Joe TRV and I love y'all.
Dear reader of this blog celebrating the 20 years of the Rome subway. It was an intense story crammed with pieces, end to ends, shootings, and many many emotions. The Heart novel (children's novel) is bollocks compared to this.
I don't wanna be outdone so I'll tell you a midnight fairy tale, actually the nine thirty in the evening-fairy tale.
Me and Sugo would meet around nine thirty at the line 36 bus stop at Via delle Isole Curzolane in the Tufello neighborhood.
I had a dream: to make the Tufello beautiful, cause apart from the Batucada pub and dope, it was a pretty dull and sleepy neighborhood.
Me and Sugo put in the work and made it into a nice super bombed sleepy-hood!
At nine thirty there was nobody around and all hell would break loose.
Cio ETC throwup, 1994.
Sugo and Joe TRV on a storefront, 1995.

The funny thing is that everybody knew I was CIO in Tufello, but for some fucking reason nobody ever said anything to me.
It was the same period as the CIO CIO CIO CIO CIO CIO end to ends on the A-line. Anyone got some flicks?
Dec ETC(China TRV), Win MT2(Stand TRV), and a throwup by Cio ETC(Joe TRV). A-line, 1994.

Nol(Joe TRV), Hest(Sugo ETC), Wist(Pane TRV), Wan MT2(Stand TRV) on a hot summer night. B-line, 1994.

And always around nine thirty, I'd meet up with Chico and Sugo.
We'd hit all the A-line stations from Termini on up all the way to Subaugusta. We'd bomb 'em hard.

Chico ZTK, 1995.
Sugo had this marker made from a blackboard eraser and an easter egg, it was totally raw.
One time in particular, we hammered away at this station, tryin' to be noticed by this dude we knew, ya know tryin' to be a little witty.
Afterwards I even got a call from him. Well anyways...
Happy ending.
