When Upsetting the Rules Becomes a Necessity
I painted this in the Magliana yard during day time. I went there with Gor. In those days the “boys in blue” were more active than usual. Our way of hitting subway cars was not a secret for them anymore. So to fool them, we had to try a new strategy and go there when they would have never expected it. We found the best moment was lunch time, just before the rush hour.
That day, the red was the only full spray can I had with me: a “rosso fuoco” from Saratoga Happy Color. I used it as the first color so if we had to run, my name would have been there anyway. In fact during the weeks before this was made, we got chased many times.

I had wasted liters of paint, without seeing the final outline I was there for. Indeed this experimental technique of painting the outline before filling the letters, was dictated by the necessity of a fast action.

I adapted my method to new needs. The result was that my work was quicker and bigger because I did not have to waste time and paint to trace it first. The outline got more dynamic being independent from the fill-in and the whole work was enhanced by a soft blur that accentuated the highlights. This last result of the blur was the only one I was already sure about. That’s the reason why I used the red, because when it fades into other colors, it still maintains its strength in readability.

Bowling a Colombo - Bowling at Colombo (Pim ZTK)

Bowling at Colombo
It was the summer of '99 and I had just returned to Rome after living in Belgium for a few years. One night, me, Gor, Gast, and One went to Colombo, the Ostia depot. Back then Gast painted with calmness even in really risky situations like that depot was that night, taking all the time in the world to finish his piece. We had painted a color end to end, and had all finished painting, and Gor and One were starting to lose their patience urging Gast to hurry up and finish his piece. At a certain point Gor and One started playing bowling with Gast's spraycans. They were all lined up on the ground so they started throwing rocks trying to knock them down...until Gast, totally annoyed by the improvised bowling competition between Gor and One, picks up one of his cans and throws it violently towards the guardhouse (just behind the train we had painted). We all started running, laughing and yelling in the night, “Gast is crazyyyyy! Gast is crazyyy!”

...(Cannas uomo)
