Yess, Neon, Jon. Linea A, 2001.

Observations of a Cell Gone Crazy

Modern society expects you to be an individual projected exclusively towards yourself. The perfect consumer, the perfectly rational homo economicus, is unable to get any benefit from sharing, is unable to perform any critical thinking regarding reality and is only interested in his own immediate benefit. His vision of the world goes no further than the squalid surface that protects that which in his depths is gradually destroyed by the deadly evolution of the socioeconomic system in which he is forced to live in.

"Whoever defaces Rome has Rome against him." Tor di Valle station. Lido line, 1999.
This cyborg that wanders around the decadent metropolises of capitalistic western society no longer has any connection with the places he was born in, and nurtures no concern whatsoever of their steady decline. He is afraid of communicating his emotions to others of his kind and is unable to care for them in a selfless manner. He is convinced and has been convinced he is not responsible for any of the things going on around him. He experiences an evergrowing frustration brought about by his incapacity to "do something about it", which eventually becomes an alibi to "not do anything at all" and wallows in the senselessness of the everyday madness he finds himself burdened with.
But the evolution of society is never casual. It can only derive from the predominance of one social element over another. The perpetual crisis we endure in our veins and our ears daily does not have the same meaning to everybody. For the so-called 99% it means impoverishment, complete uncertainty regarding the future, growing repression, and loss of all reference points; like supportively and actively living one's city and the multitude of people surrounding you.

Ver, Neon, Koma and Jon passing over the S. Paolo bridge. B-line, 2007.
For the remaining 1% the transformations observed in the last 30 years have meant a previously unheard-of enrichment founded on the misappropriation of most of the cultural gains achieved through hard-won battles by that part of society that today is suffering this crisis the hardest. An enrichment that coincides today with the ever more refined production of systems of control and repression, (facebook, satellites, microcameras, wiretappings, and weapons of all sorts) that is more or less consciously changing our way of living.

The readers of XXRoma may be rightfully asking themselves: what has all this got to do with graffiti? I believe that graffiti has much, much to do with all of this...yes, because from time immemorial the sleep of our masters has never been forever undisturbed...and in every organism there is always a cell that goes crazy and starts questioning the system he's a part of and starts acting radically by subverting the rules it begins recognizing as unfair and useful only in perpetuating the power of those detaining it. The madness of this cell is, in certain cases, the first conscious step that can bring about the reclaiming of one's vital space closest to us, up to a radical transformation of the existing reality.

One Ver NSA. B-line, 2005.

"Church, military, and politics have importance because there is a population...but we are the population, let's not forget that!"

"To the serfs." Des NSA and Ver NSA. B-line, 2005.
The complex organism I have had the privilege of growing up in together with most of the contributors of this blog is the Capital city, and we are the cells that started going crazy; some earlier, and some later during the course of the fabulous 90's (at least for the Roman writers). The Roman graffiti writing phenomenon was, at its dawn, and thanks to some of us still to this day, beautifully wild, with certain aspects of spontaneity that one could not be mistaken in defining revolutionary. The way in which the first Roman vandals took possession and completely devastated the Eternal City, both on its surface as well as underground, is something that gave new life to the Capital. A new culture, or as Jon would put it, "a new alphabet" was constructed in a completely spontaneous manner, making us able to speak a language different from that of consumerism, appearance, or that of Italian political clichès. A language that has enabled us to recognize one another, develop a deep understanding, and make us feel part of a common process while at the same time pursuing the upholding of our name, in other words living moments of unrepeatable freedom.

Yess, Neon, Jon. A-line, 2001.

We never were, and are not a political organization or a squat attempting to imitate the deeds of our glorious revolutionary ancestors, but a group of youngsters hungry for freedom of action and expression that were able to achieve something apparently unfathomable: giving a revolutionary, and thus a collective hue to an activity only apparently performed according to the paradigm of contemporary society that is entirely based on individualism.
This society aims at taking your identity away? The cell gone mad responds by getting up...And if "getting one's name up at all costs" may seem like an intrinsically egoistic activity, in reality it is not. The name you're pushing at all costs becomes the key to conduct a life, at least partially in contrast to the rules imposed on us, a tool that leads one to immediately comprehend worth and necessity of sharing this "battle" with other cells affected by this "vandalic sickness"...

Ver NSA, Neon. Lido line, 2006.

Kare NSA, Yess TUW, Neon, Syla PAC. A-line, 2001.

...in certain Roman crews a solidarity and harmony were created that are uncomprehensible to anyone who has not lived and does not live graffiti writing in a radical manner, which is a purely revolutionary value, antithetical to the boorish individualism of contemporary society. Even when a writer grows up and moves away from all this he cannot stop bringing inside him what it means to be a Vandal Inside...

"Vandalism as a countervalue." B-line, 2004
One. "Vandals at heart." B-line, 1996.
So here we are in 2012, each of us with his age, problems, and own personal path, finding ourselves together again and not help but live, reflect, and write as Vandals Inside do...with the cyclic necessity to punish some helpless carriage of our metro or destroy a street of the city...we are unable to transform, as many have done, our essence into something it is possible to attach a price tag to...after all when you are a cell that goes insane, when you are a Vandal Inside, as the ZTK guys have taught us, you remain so forever...

L'Ultimo Verme - The Last Worm (Pung ARF HP)

Era lì, caldo e faceva i suoi rumori. Pochi mesi dopo ritornai a Roma dai miei amici.

The Last Worm

When I came to Rome for the first time in 2004, the metro seemed to me like an incomprehensible book. It was dirty and all written up, and according to my opinion as a foreign graffiti writer, people had no respect for one another. The pieces were often crossed out and the graffiti was crude and executed with little precision.

I soon met the guys from the ARF crew. All different from one another but nice people with which I would have soon spent many hours "reading" the sides of the A line trains, drinking many Peroni beers, doing tags on the station platforms, and shooting photos of new pieces. A while later I started painting the line with them. It was instant love. It wasn't enough for me to go to their "spot". I started painting during the daytime as well, jumping on the tracks in front of passengers to reach the trains parked in the tunnels. From that moment on a true love story had begun with this line that runs completely underground.

I am like a rat. I like tunnels where it never rains and where the sun never shines. I spent so many nights trying to find new ways to get in and paint. The important thing wasn't even being able to reach the subway train, but trying to sneak into the tunnel and breathing the rotten air typical of the A-line. But soon enough a terrible tragedy occurred on the A-line that was like a sickness. The old cars were replaced with these horrible white plastic cars.

Neor Pung ARF, 2006.

It is as if the beautiful orange worm that had been running across Rome for so many years was being devoured by the modern monsters without a soul. During that period many Roman writers stopped painting. A page in history had been turned. But me, Neor, and also Erotik from time to time kept checking the layups and the yards, as if obsessed by the color orange, as if we refused to accept this change. One night, shortly before my transfer abroad, we met the last surviving orange train that was still running on the line. There it was, warm and making its usual sounds. The sounds of the huge metal beast that rests, satisfied after its hard day's work. I always thought that it might even have dreams itself. We slowly got closer and with extreme joy we started painting. It had been months since I had touched it. I was caught in between two emotions. On one hand the excitement of once again painting it, maybe for the last time. On the other the bitterness in thinking that soon even this "composition" would soon disappear. A few months later I returned to Rome to see my friends. The last evening was a classic "saturday night" with Peroni beers, throwups, techno, brawls and drugs...we left the party to go take the first A-line train towards Anagnina then straight to the airport.
It was 6 in the morning when this famous orange subway stopped in front of me. I thought it could not be real, that it was just the effect of the LSD I had eaten that I was halucinating on. I took a flick and understood it was real. It was the last time I ever saw this subway running, and I like to think that the worm accompanied me out of Rome before going to die in the depth of his lair, just like an old dog thanks you for all the love you gave him before disappearing in the woods.
